This relatively cheap box says to contain all Miles Davis concerts, radio shows and club performances from the 1948 to 1955 period. That's not true - The live performances Miles Davis made as a member of the Charlie Parker groups are not in this box. Not really a problem, as those recordings have been released in numerous Charlie Parker boxes before. And...the very carefully kept booklet reads, one March 1949 session with a musical joust between a dixieland band and a bebop group with Miles Davis playing for 25 uninteresting seconds has been left out too.

This box is not for the starting jazz collector who wants to hear Miles Davis play at the start of his career - no, please, try to find Miles Davis' Blue Note recordings and enjoy these studio recordings - This is an essential compilation for the fanatic jazz collector who wants to follow the development of Miles Davis trumpet.

I don't think I should list now all sessions available in this box - you can find it at the United Archives website, although this website was not active today. I hope this is a temporarly problem. The oldest tracks were recorded at the Street of Paris in Los Angeles, March 1946, by the Benny Carter Orchestra and were inserted in this box as a kind of bonus tracks as Miles Davis was present somewhere in the band. If you like you can enjoy the Miles Davis Nonet at the Royal Roost September 1948 with a young Miles Davis (22 years) four months before it was actually recorded for Capitol. You can listen to the first, so-called Birth of the Cool group, which brought a new sound to the audience, to Miles Davis as part of the Tadd Dameron band on his first trip to Europe. They played at the Salle Pleyel in Paris a remarkable concert; - the only opportunity for you to hear Davis announcing the tunes, something he would never do again. You can enjoy the 1951 recordings featuring a young Sonny Rollins and a Eddie Lockjaw Davis (22 and 23 years old). The set ends with the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival performance with an all star formation, featuring Miles Davis trumpet, Zoot Sims on tenor saxophone, Gerry Mulligan on baritone saxophone, Thelonious Monk on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Connie Kay on drums. The final tracks are from a television broadcast The Steve Allen Tonight Show at the Basin Street Club November 1955, one of the first concerts with his new quintet featuring a 29 years old John Coltrane, which would become a new chapter in Miles Davis musical life.

A great box that gives you the opportunity to sit in the front seats at Miles Davis early concerts.

I apologize. I was looking for Vol 10 and I wasn't aware that the long download times for 1,2 and 3 meant that they contained multiples. Thank you for the music and your work.
